"Ira, Mom told us not to go trick-or-treating at this house. She said it was haunted."
"Oh, don't be a baby, Emmy," said Ira holding her hand a bit tighter. "You don't believe in ghosts do you?"
"Not really," said Emmy, looking back over her shoulder. "It's just that I don't like the look of this place. That creepy pumpkin kind of scares me."
Ira lifted his lamp just a little bit higher. He could see the mist taking shape around the corners of the house, and it did sort of looked like a ghost (if you squinted your eyes). A shiver went down his back as he spied an owl up on the peak of the roof. "Hoo," said the owl.
"I'm starting to feel a bit chilly, Em. Shall we call it a night and head for home after all?"
"Hah! Who's the baby now, Ira"? teased Emmy. "Don't dish it out if you can't take it!"
Suddenly a flock of bats swooped out of the sky from behind the house. Both of the children screamed at the top of their lungs and ran home as fast as their legs would carry them. Just maybe their mother had been right all along.
